Psychological Assessment for Adults

Our Registered Psychologists have many years’ experience conducting assessments with adults.

Why would I choose to have a psychological assessment?

  • To help ascertain the presence or absence of psychological diagnoses.
  • To determine the causes of any current challenges.
  • To make recommendations for treatment options based on thorough assessment.
  • To determine the clients’ strengths and how to capitalise on them to improve day to day functioning.

Do I need a referral

  • You can self refer for a psychological assessment

Clients are also sometimes referred by physicians, lawyers, insurance companies, employers, or other third party payers.

What happens during assessment?

Step 1. Interview.

  • We start with a conversation with the individual being assessed. You are welcome to bring a support person with you, for example, your partner, adult child, parent or friend.
  • This conversation helps us to understand what challenges you are experiencing as well as your strengths and the goals you have for the assessment.

Step 2: questionnaires and standardised measures.

  • We use scientifically validated questionnaires and standardised interviewed to help us understand your mood and mental health better.

Step 3: Collateral interviews.

  • If helpful and with the client’s consent we might then conduct interviews with a relative, friend or counsellor to help us to understand you better.

Step 4: Formulation and report.

We prepare a useful and accessible report with the results of the assessment. This report will include:

  • The results of the assessment.
  • Any diagnoses that are being made.
  • Sometimes we will give our opinion regarding the causes of any challenges (for example, if requested to do so by a lawyer in a medical-legal context).
  • Specific and detailed recommendations aimed at capitalizing on the client’s strengths as well as making helpful adjustments to the school, home or work environment to improve functioning.

Step 5:  Feedback meeting:

  • We meet with the client and anyone else they would like to bring and carefully explain the results of the assessment, our recommendations and everything in our report.

Step 6: Final touches

  • After the feedback meeting we make any final changes to the report and then send it to the client.
  • At the client’s request the report can also be circulated to third parties e.g. the person who referred you, your family doctor, lawyer, counsellor etc.
