assessment

psychoeducational

What types of things can a psychoeducational assessment evaluate?

  • intellectual functioning or IQ
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Learning disabilities e.g. dyslexia, math disorder (dyscalculia)
  • cognitive and academic strengths
  • giftedness.
What is the assessment process like?

Step 1. Interview.

  • We start with a conversation with the individual being assessed. Depending on the age of the person and their wishes this could also include their parents, their partner, a friend, a support worker, counsellor etc. Note when assessing children, parents or guardians are always included in this conversation.
  • This conversation helps us to understand what challenges the individual is experiencing as well as their strengths and the goals they have for the assessment. Now we can decide what happens in the next part of the assessment.
  • On this day part of the payment for assessment is due.

Step 2Assessment.

  • Next we complete assessment measures with the client. This might include an IQ test, assessments of academic functioning, questionnaires about mood and mental health etc. All of the evaluation measures we use are scientifically validated.

Step 3: Collateral interviews.

  • If helpful and with the client’s consent we might then conduct interviews with teachers, support staff, counsellors etc.

Step 4: Formulation and report.

We prepare a useful and accessible report with the results of the assessment. This report will include:

  • The results of the assessment
  • Any diagnoses that are being made
  • Lots of specific and detailed recommendations aimed at capitalizing on the client’s strengths as well as making helpful adjustments to the school, home or work environment to improve functioning.

Step 5:  Feedback meeting:

  • We met with the client and anyone else they would like to bring and carefully explain the results of the assessment, our recommendations and everything in our report.
  • When children are assessed their parents or legal guardians are always part of this meeting.

Step 6: Final touches

  • After the feedback meeting we make any final changes to the report and then send it to the client.
  • At the client’s request the report can also be circulated to third parties e.g. school, family doctor, counsellor etc.  Note, when children are assessed it is the parents who are required to give this consent.
  • When the report is ready to go, the remainder of payment for the assessment is due.
